Gottfried Keller (1819-1890) published his collection of legends in 1872. He used the Christian legends of Ludwig Gotthard Kosegarten as templates, but under the influence of Ludwig Feuerbach's critical philosophy of religion, he altered their religious content. Keller is no longer concerned with traditional religious expectations of salvation, but rather with the poetic fulfillment of earthly love.
