The cable whip offered here is needed when connecting SATA drives to special RAID controller cards. Often, the expansion cards have one or more sockets for SFF8087 type connectors, also known as Mini-SAS. The advantage of this interface is that electrical signals from up to four SATA (6G) hard drives or SSDs can be transmitted over this single connection. Frequently, there is not enough space on the RAID controller cards to solder as many SATA ports as can be controlled by the controller.

In this case, the Mini-SAS interface with SFF8087 is often the preferred solution. Plugged into such a socket, the other end of the offered cable consists of four standard SATA data connectors and one SGPIO cable. The cable or the individual strands are approximately 50 cm long and come in black, while the connectors themselves are also black.
