Franz Grillparzer (1791-1872) primarily wrote for the stage and is regarded today as the most significant Austrian playwright of the 19th century. In addition, Grillparzer left behind autobiographical writings, diaries, and only two novellas: "The Monastery near Sendomir" and "The Minstrel." Both texts are included in this volume, along with the story "An Experience," a haunting tale from the diaries that Grillparzer did not publish during his lifetime.
