Product details
Victoria Woodhull ran for the presidency of the United States in 1872, becoming the first woman to do so. As an unorthodox feminist and socialist, a proponent of free love, and the first female Wall Street broker, she temporarily became a leader of the radical American women's movement. She was one of the few feminists of the 19th century who did not come from a middle-class background. Her focus was less on fighting against discriminatory structures and more on encouraging women to take on greater political responsibility and initiative. Woodhull did not aim to lobby for women's interests but sought to advocate for a free society as a whole. In addition to women's suffrage, she primarily championed social freedom, calling for the abolition of marriage laws, prison reforms, and better education.
