These oxides need to be specifically removed, as they can quickly lead to a black, non-wettable separation layer. The conventional cleaning method with a wet sponge can cause a shock-like temperature drop, thereby reducing the lifespan of the soldering tip. In the Weller WDC Dry Cleaner, a special spiral wool is used for cleaning the soldering tip. For coarse cleaning, the contaminated old solder is tapped against a soft edge into the collection container. The fine cleaning is then carried out by wiping or twisting the soldering tip in the spiral wool. After fine cleaning, a thin layer of residual solder remains, which prevents immediate oxidation of the soldering tip and thus provides a significant advantage over cleaning with a sponge.
