A question for owners of the new 14-24 for the new Z series:
I didn't switch from the 850/800 because this was exactly the lens I was missing. For me it was one of the very best on the market.
Is the new one comparable? The reason I ask is that it is smaller and doesn't have the curvature and large glass of the ED lens. Is it still as good in terms of imaging geometry?
If so, then I can imagine switching to the Z. Before that, I still need good old lenses.

Dear Reto, I have been using this lens since March 2021 and have never regretted buying it. The Z lenses are consistently of very high quality. Technical comparisons can certainly be found on well-known websites... I can only recommend this lens. Greetings Erhard

Hi Reto, I also waited a relatively long time before switching to the Nikon Z series. The Z lenses are designed for the very high resolutions of the Z9 and Z7II and are worth every franc! For me, the comparable Z-series lenses are clearly better than the old F-series 2.8 lenses. Have fun Bruno

Other people have already replied with very complete answers.
i'm one of the people who got the 14-24 2.8G, i went through the z 14-30 4s which didn't convince me and so i bought this z 14-24 2.8s which offers superb quality.
to answer your question, it is smaller because the new Z mount compared to the old F is wider and therefore the elements can be placed closer to the sensor. for lenses with wide angles this leaves more design possibilities and consequently reduces the size.

The 14-24 S in the Z-mount is better in all respects than the "old" F-mount. It is sharper, lighter and smaller. I am always surprised how great the 14-24 S is. There are many reviews that confirm this, e.g. https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-z-14-24mm-f2-8-s/3 
I also use the lens for astrophotography and even there at 14mm f/2.8 it is convincing across the board.

Another advantage of the 14-24 S is the possibility of "simply" using filters. Nikon supplies two apertures, one of which supports 112mm round filters. Unfortunately, these are very expensive. From Nisi (and possibly other suppliers in the meantime) there is a filter holder for 100mm (not 150mm!) rectangular filters. Only the polarising filter is a little problematic as it can vignette a little depending on the direction of rotation. Nevertheless, you are well covered for long exposures without breaking the bank.

I first had the 14-30 Z, but it never convinced me. IQ in the corners and on the edges was never satisfactory unfortunately, especially at 14mm.
The price is one of the few negative points but in my opinion it's definitely worth the money. And it seems to be on sale right now.
