Do I understand correctly that two screens (one with HDMI and one with VGA) can be operated via this docking station? Independently of each other, i.e. with extended mode and not with a mirrored image? (Two monitors would otherwise not be so useful...)

I can't answer that question. I only needed the part a long time ago to operate a VGA display with a new laptop.
