I have a simple Samsung Galaxy J5. In some forums it was said that this does not work with the remote control. Is this true and if so what alternatives are there other than a new phone?

Here is a list from DJI on compatibility with the DJI Go app, unfortunately your phone is not included:

There are various workarounds (e.g. downgrade to an older Android version), but they vary depending on the phone. It's best to check forums for workarounds.
