I have been using the MagSafe Charger for some time now. It sits on my nightstand and is always plugged in. About every other evening I have to unplug it and plug it back in again because otherwise it won't charge. Is this normal or does the charger or the 20W power supply have a defect?

it doesn't sound normal. it also consumes power permanently when it is plugged in, even when it is not charging a device. It is better to disconnect it from the mains when not in use.
