Of course it works without a power supply unit. At least it works for me. It is important to note that this version only supports up to 65 watts, which is too low for some laptops (at least my Dell always complains).

But you should note that the connections are DP (Display Port) and not HDMI. I bought the dock before 2021. That was still ok then. But today I would rather go for HDMI.

To connect just one monitor, a hub with HDMI would probably be the better and cheaper alternative.
