What is a focus book?
Focus books are to infants what beginner reading books are to children learning the alphabet; they are essentially first-look books. Like almost everything, seeing also needs to be learned.
A person's vision goes through many stages before it matures enough to perceive the environment in all its nuances. For example, a newborn only reacts to light. It takes about one to two weeks for the baby's eyes to follow moving objects. Another two weeks pass before they can focus on objects. It is now known that infants during their first weeks of life categorize shapes into light and dark. Therefore, they respond easily to clear black-and-white patterns with distinct outlines.
Two to three months after birth, color perception begins to develop. The infant increasingly learns to differentiate the spectrum of light and to distinguish the environment by shape and color. However, at this point, vision is still imperfect, and babies rely more on outlines than on structured surfaces, recognizing bright, vivid colors better than soft tones. Particularly bright and shiny objects attract their attention.
This focus book is specifically designed to align with this developmental process. In the beginning, the black-and-white patterns provide the ideal stimulus. Soon, the baby becomes interested in the back of the accordion book, where bold colors help further develop their young vision. Inserted holograms additionally spark the toddler's curiosity.
20 to 30 centimeters is the ideal distance when you want to show the images to the infant individually. Alternatively, you can set up the accordion book like a room divider around their lying area.
