The concept of expectation plays a central role in sociology. On one hand, it describes an actor's assumption about what another person or several others would do (anticipatory expectation) or what he or others ought to do (normative expectation). When an expectation is disappointed, it is usually changed, but in a few cases, it is also maintained (counterfactual stability).
