Product details

Adrian Wewer (April 14, 1836 in Harsewinkel; March 15, 1914 in San Francisco; known as Brother Adrian Wewer) was a German monk who gained significance through his church buildings in the USA. Born as Antonius Wewer, he joined the Franciscan Order at the age of 22. As Brother Adrian, he took his vows and professed in the Franciscan monastery in Warendorf in 1858. At the request of Bishop Henry Damian Junker of Alton, Illinois, monks were to come to America to begin work in the Diocese of Alton. In 1862, Brother Adrian traveled with four other monks from Wiedenbrück to America. Brother Adrian was an excellent carpenter and, along with other brothers, designed Gothic altars and other furniture for the first St. Francis Church in Quincy.
