At the center of this volume, which emerged from two symposia in Innsbruck, are the history and practice of yodeling and multi-part singing in the Alps. Despite its regional focus, yodeling is also examined in an intercultural context. Among other aspects, the study explores the origins of yodeling in Austria and Bavaria since the 18th century, the relationship of yodeling to cow calls, alpine blessings, and alphorn playing, music-cognitive processes involved in learning natural yodeling in Switzerland and its emotional effects, parallels between yodeling and circle singing, as well as yodeling as an expression of 'Swissness' among the Amish in Berne, Indiana. Regarding the topic of multi-part singing in the Alpine region, traditional forms are highlighted, alongside an attempt at European contextualization: the Trallalero in Genoa, 'tìir' in Premana, singing in the Aosta Valley, and multi-part music-making in Switzerland. The 19 contributions by 16 authors, which are thematically and partially regionally extensive, illustrate both the complexity of Alpine folk music and the current interest in the voices of the Alps from musicological, historical, and sociological perspectives. The editors aim to provide readers with a broad view alongside detailed insights into the Alpine voices through this extensive range of scholarly articles and documentary contributions. Additionally, the book publication makes numerous audio and video recordings from field research available, which have been uploaded to the repository of the Mozarteum University Salzburg.
