Product details

In the 19th century, Iserlohn was the largest town in Westphalia south of the River Lippe, even ahead of Dortmund. The prosperity based on iron ore processing characterised the cityscape at that time. This photo book illustrates the streets and squares of Iserlohn, the public buildings and the churches between 1749 and 1968, bringing former shops and streets back to life. Impressive photographs recall buildings that no longer exist, such as the double villa of the Herbers and Romberg families, or the popular tram that ran until 1960. In their leisure time, the people of Iserlohn liked to party in one of the many pubs, such as the ¿Altdeutsche Bierstuben¿, at the Seilersee or in the ¿Neue Halle¿ on Alexanderhöhe. The Iserlohner Bürgerschützenverein organises an annual shooting festival that attracts young and old alike. The Iserlohn-born architect and local historian Ernst Dossmann and Hanswerner Hildenbrand, the long-standing managing director of the Märkischer Kreis district craftsmen's association, have compiled the most beautiful photographs of old Iserlohn. The approximately 200 historical photographs bring the past of the town in the Sauerland region back to life.
