The book "Alternative Rite of Passage for Female Genital Cutting" examines the ARP program of the African health organization AMREF, which serves as a local intervention against female genital cutting (FGC) in the Maasai communities of Kajiado County, Kenya. Through three months of ethnographic field research, the study provides deep insights into the rituals and practices of the ARP, which are the result of interactions between the Maasai communities, AMREF, and other stakeholders. This dynamic makes the ARP context-dependent and complex. The authors critically engage with issues such as cultural relativism, human rights, and development concerns, thereby contributing to an important discourse on FGC and alternative practices.
