The naturalist, ethnologist, travel writer, and revolutionary Johann Georg Adam Forster (1754 - 1794) is considered one of the first representatives of scientific travel literature. Based on scientific foundations, he managed to write in a way that is both exciting and easy to read. His works do not merely string together data, as was common in previous travel literature, but instead offer vivid and reliable ethnographic facts. Forster frequently interrupts pure description to philosophically reflect on his observations. The main focus of his accounts is always on the people he encountered, their behavior, customs, traditions, religions, and social structures. This is a reprint of the 1868 edition, which includes an introduction and notes by Wilhelm Buchner.
