Product details

This study investigated work-related respiratory impairments in the quarrying industry. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted, collecting data from 411 quarry workers and 411 control subjects for spirometric evaluation. Among the 411 quarry workers, 92% were well aware of the dangers of dust. 396 (96.4%) had good knowledge of respiratory protective equipment (RPE), 374 (91%) used the RPE provided by their employer, and 93.6% always used the provided RPE. 380 (95.6%) of the quarry workers received training on the correct use of RPE. The average total suspended particle (TSP) level in the quarry environment was 5.22 ± 3.38 mg/m3, while the TSP level in the control environment was 0.11 ± 0.08 mg/m3. The mean concentration of particulate matter less than ten micrometers (PM10) in the quarries was 1.27 ± 0.67 mg/m3, compared to 0.02 ± 0.01 mg/m3 in the control environment. The mean concentration of particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) in the quarry was 0.54 ± 0.34 mg/m3, while in the control environment it was 0.02 ± 0.01 mg/m3. The mean forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), as a percentage of predicted values, was 79.40 ± 2.73% for the quarry workers and 89.46 ± 31.24% for the control subjects.
