Product details
Media technological processes today are significantly determined by algorithms. This work discusses their function in filtering and organizing attention offerings. The concept of attention is borrowed from Georg Franck's economy of attention. The algorithmic preparation of the offerings is based on extensive measurements of individual and collective attention processes. At the same time, algorithms always exclude certain offerings. This limitation proves to be both useful and risky in the vast, interconnected attention market, as it can be manipulated economically or ideologically. An examination of the filter bubble theory as a concrete media technological limitation shows that such filtering tools have always been problematic, but algorithms are currently rightly criticized because the exclusion and inclusion of offerings often remain opaque. The work concludes that Franck's model provides a basis for reflecting on algorithmic processes.
