On behalf of the Italian magazine Internazionale, the comic blogger Zerocalcare traveled to the Turkish-Syrian border region. In the areas dominated by Kurds, the autonomous region of Rojava was established, with the city of Kobane symbolizing the resistance in the fight against the Islamic State. In January 2014, the democratically self-governed community created a social charter: promoting gender equality, religious freedom, and the abolition of the death penalty.
