Berlin, the metropolis on the Spree, has a tumultuous history to tell: from Prussian kings and monumental plans, to the Cold War and socialist utopias, to destruction and reconstruction. Photographer Thorsten Klapsch has long been interested in the city and its unique places, as he began his photographic exploration with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. His portrait of Berlin is different from what most city and architecture guides present, as his new book is an exciting exploration of buildings, squares, and locations that have since disappeared, been transformed, or renovated, which shape the cityscape and tell stories of the past both then and now. Klapsch is a photographic chronicler, an observer of details and changes with a distinctive visual language. From the no longer existing border crossing Drewitz/Dreilinden to the Palace of the Republic, the Zoo Palast before its renovation, the Sports and Recreation Center SEZ, and even to prefabricated buildings or the Council of State building, his new book offers us an individual and unique perspective on a city caught between memory and change.
