Why are 'translators' and 'interpreters' in Germany not protected professional titles? After all, corresponding efforts have been underway for more than 60 years. To clarify this, Annika Schlesiger first examines the status quo: she outlines the legal framework for the work of translators and interpreters in Germany and recaps the historical development of the profession as well as the efforts for its protection. She pays particular attention to the institutional organization in national and international associations. With a look at Denmark, Australia, and Canada, she presents practical examples of professional protection for language mediators and ultimately formulates the opportunities and challenges of future professional protection for translators and interpreters in Germany.
