Salomon Hermann Mosenthal (1821-1877), a respected librettist and playwright of the second half of the 19th century, has fallen into obscurity today. In addition to his stage works, he left behind five 'Tales from Jewish Family Life.' In these sensitive sketches, he develops a nuanced picture of Jewish life between tradition and emancipation, the poverty of the Hessian communities from which he also came, the tension between Orthodox and Reform Jews, the contributions of women to the community, and the hopes of the younger generation to lead a more fulfilling life than their elders.
