The racial ideology of National Socialism demanded, on one hand, the eradication of "life unworthy of life," and on the other hand, the promotion of the master race. To comply with the latter and to care for mothers and children of good blood, the SS organization Lebensborn e.V. was founded in 1935, which Heinrich Himmler personally oversaw. Strict selection and secrecy were two of the organization's highest commandments, and for this reason, rumors about possible breeding facilities of the SS emerged during the Nazi era and have persisted to the present day. Although these are baseless claims, Lebensborn was by no means the charitable organization it was described as in the final verdict of the Nuremberg Lebensborn trial. Its activities in Germany are examined in this volume, as well as its operations in the conquered eastern and western territories, with particular attention given to Norway, where Lebensborn e.V. held a very special position.
