Product details

The Café of the Blue Rider, Kaufering, 1913: Cläre is a country girl. She dreams of graduating from high school, but she has to help her father with trout farming. When her aunt dies, her life suddenly turns upside down, as her aunt has left her money for her graduation and a university education. The only condition: she must move to Munich. Thus, Cläre ends up at a friend of her aunt's in Café Altschwabing, the center of the Bohemian scene. Artists and writers come and go, discussions and arguments abound, drawings are made, poetry is written, and history is created. While Cläre helps out in the café, she gets a taste of life, freedom, and love. Art and love, riots and the threat of war – the Bohemians gather at the artist café Altschwabing. The painters and writers who populated popular cafés like Altschwabing, Simplicissimus, or Stefanie in Schwabing and Maxvorstadt are now world-renowned names such as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, the anarchist Erich Mühsam, and the writers Joachim Ringelnatz, Paul Heyse, and Franz Wedekind. Here, Thomas Theodor Heine drew the sharpest caricatures of the Empire for the satirical magazine Simplicissimus, and the publisher Reinhard Piper discussed the publication of the almanac "The Blue Rider" with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc.
