The Sigmund Freud Complete Works (SFG), established in 2015 by Christfried Tögel, consists of 23 volumes and is the first collection of writings that includes all works intended for publication by Sigmund Freud, including his reviews and contributions to manuals and encyclopedias. Freud's writings are presented in the form in which they first appeared. All texts are preceded by brief introductions providing biographical and historical context. An overview at the end of each volume facilitates the location of texts within the collected writings, collected works, and study edition. Volume 9 includes, among other things, the study "Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious." The latter is considered a key work not only in psychoanalysis but also in humor research. Freud viewed jokes as a technique of the unconscious for conflict alleviation and pleasure gain.
