Product details
The question of corporate social engagement has gained significant importance in public debate in recent years. However, there are still few coherent and convincing studies on this topic. Political science is no exception in this regard, as the subject has largely gone unnoticed here as well. Therefore, I am particularly pleased with the study conducted by Jonna Barth, in which she conceptually and empirically explores how the interplay between political, economic, and civil society actors is shaped. The author consistently employs a political science perspective to bring together discussions on social capital, the activating state, citizenship, and ultimately governance and steering theory to examine corporate citizenship. She impresses with her structural considerations, which she presents very clearly. She succeeds in demonstrating that the corporate citizenship policies in the federal states she studied are so distinct that comparative perspectives can only be established with difficulty. Her argument that there are no general trends in development and that even simple attempts at typology formation already face significant challenges suggests that this study contributes to opening up a new and important field of political science research. The idea for this work emerged at the intersection of various worlds when I, as a political scientist employed at a consulting firm, was able to participate in one of the first social engagements of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. The question of how politics, business, and non-governmental organizations interact to solve pressing social issues has since occupied me greatly.
