This book is based on the concept of pluricentricity of the German language. It examines the Austrian variety of German and its variants, Austrian German and Austriazisms in the field of gastronomy. Specifically, it focuses on typical Austrian dish names as identity conveyers among Austrians. Austrian German has been analyzed and compared with the inner-German language used in menus from Berlin and Vienna. The high significance of Austrian German in relation to the sense of identity and language awareness of Austrians is demonstrated in the results of the survey and interviews. The awareness and popularity of typical Austrian dish names and food names were also assessed. The results of conversations conducted with managers and staff from several typical Austrian restaurants in Vienna showed that Austrian dish names are increasingly and more consciously used to promote Austrian culture.
