Fanfiction is a form of fan activity that has gained popularity since the 1990s, with the transition to the internet. The term 'fanfiction,' borrowed from English, refers to a literary phenomenon in which fans produce fictional texts based on a (often well-known) source from the broad spectrum of media. The produced texts ('fanfictions') can in turn be read by fans, mostly through internet platforms. The core of this book is to highlight the didactic potential for modern German instruction by establishing connections to existing didactic approaches in literature, media, and writing education. There is also a focus on the motivation for writing and reading, which can particularly facilitate the learning process for struggling students. In doing so, the phenomenon of fanfiction uniquely incorporates the current media usage behavior of learners into the learning process by using individual interests as a starting point.
