TV debates are among the most important events in modern media election campaigns. Not only before federal elections, but also before state elections, TV duels between leading candidates have become established and reach numerous voters. While TV duels before federal elections are often studied, there are currently no comprehensive analyses of TV duels before state elections. This volume fills the research gap using the example of the 2011 state election in Baden-Württemberg. The TV duel between Stefan Mappus (CDU) and Nils Schmid (SPD) before this state election was eagerly anticipated, as both Stuttgart 21 and the consequences of the reactor disaster in Japan gave the election campaign a special dynamic. The content, perceptions, and effects of the TV duel are systematically captured using various methods: surveys, content analyses, expert interviews, and real-time response measurements.
