The locomotive fleet of Deutsche Bahn AG presents itself as very modern today. Most of the older models from the times of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Reichsbahn (before 1994) have nearly disappeared, with only a few remaining examples. Even the first generation of new electric locomotives from DB AG, which were introduced in the second half of the 1990s, is increasingly being phased out. In long-distance and regional transport, modern multiple units dominate operations, while locomotive-hauled passenger trains are now only seen occasionally. In freight transport, modern dual-power locomotives have been introduced, which are expected to gradually replace the remaining older diesel locomotives in the medium to long term.
