"Der Insulaner verliert die Ruhe nicht!" The theme song from Günter Neumann's famous radio cabaret "Die Insulaner" was heard for the first time on 25 December 1948 in the RIAS Berlin programme and soon advanced to become the secret anthem of Berliners. "Die Insulaner" - beloved by their followers, despised by their critics as the incarnation of sentimental-pathetic local patriotism and condemned by the SED leadership as "warmongers" - were among the most controversial cabarets of the post-war period. Nevertheless, they were probably Berlin's most popular ambassadors in those years and represented the city's interests with jokes, satire, irony and deeper meaning.
