In his unique style, Radek Knapp tells of the involuntary emigration of twelve-year-old Walerian from Poland to Vienna. His school career is short and ends with his expulsion. When his mother also throws him out on the street, he enjoys the feeling of freedom in his new home - and the acquaintance with mould. He struggles to get by with odd jobs and penetrates deeper and deeper layers of Viennese life. There he encounters little sympathy for people from across the border and learns a lot about the limits of good taste and legality. At some point he understands that "home" can be anywhere - if he manages to find his own way.
