Product details
Mehmet Ata examines the Mohammed cartoon controversy at its peak in February 2006 and the subsequent discourses through a comparative discourse analysis. By comparing media discourses from an Islamic and a Christian-dominated country, he ventures into uncharted academic territory. The author demonstrates that in the cartoon controversy, national narratives are perpetuated in both Germany and Turkey, and that the conflicting parties rarely engage with each other's arguments. Instead, mutual enemy images are constructed. The author also shows that in Germany, the clash between freedom of the press and respect for religious feelings has led to unpredictable discursive dynamics. Interviews with prominent editors support this observation.
