A schoolyard essentially serves to provide a balance to the educational activities, allowing students and teachers to relax and distract themselves from lessons. This can be achieved through sports and play offerings, as well as retreat and relaxation areas. When the design of the open space is tailored to the local situation, history, and needs, it also creates a good foundation for strengthening the identification of all participants with their school, thereby contributing to the formation of a school community feeling.

The development of the design, with a particular focus on increasing identification with the school, is the subject of this work. The author, Stefan Buschmeier, illustrates the process of redesigning a schoolyard, from engaging with the location and the stakeholders to creating a conceptual design. The emphasis is on strengthening identification while also creating a multifunctional open space.
