Product details
"The City of the Sun" by the Italian Dominican Tommaso Campanella is one of the most significant utopian societies of the early modern period, alongside Francis Bacon's "New Atlantis" and Thomas More's "Utopia." Like Bacon and More, Campanella draws on Plato's account of Atlantis and develops the concept of a radically communist future society in the form of a poetic dialogue, which often anticipates the practices of later communist social experiments. Family and private property are abolished, and women and children primarily serve the preservation of the people. The City of the Sun is governed by a selfless priestly caste that strictly oversees all areas of life and possesses the intellectual capabilities necessary for state governance.
