Since the founding of the Markneukirchen guild in 1677, an extraordinarily important centre of violin making with an international reputation has developed in the Vogtland region of Saxony, which still harbours considerable potential for research, particularly with regard to the surviving products. This conference report therefore focuses on the constructional and stylistic characteristics of historical Vogtland stringed instruments. Until well into the 20th century, traditional violin making in the Vogtland-Western Bohemian musical region was characterised by a method of construction without the use of a mould (free nesting). This method was widespread in almost all regions of Europe in the early days of violin making. The stringed instruments in the funeral chapel of Freiberg Cathedral, which date from the end of the 16th century and are believed to be copies of Italian models, were also built using the free nesting technique. Further papers on this topic present the results of analyses of preserved Vogtland instruments from several collections (Leipzig, Markneukirchen, Michaelstein, Nuremberg). As the papers show, modern methods such as dendrochronology, computer tomography and full-surface wood thickness measurements are playing an increasingly important role in researching the instruments. Musical and tonal aspects are discussed in the articles on acoustics and the use of the viola in music up to around 1750. The wide-ranging spectrum of topics also includes observations on the history of research and tradition of Vogtland-West Bohemian violin making, on the cooperation between the violin making centre in Mittenwald in southern Germany and that in the Saxon Vogtland, and on the work of Vogtland violin makers in Dresden.
