Striking with chants, choreographies, critical messages, and sometimes extravagant behavior, ultra groups across Germany use the stadium stage to carry out their actions, drawing the attention of the fan scene, clubs and associations, the media, politics, and academia. In particular, scene-specific characteristics such as the critical stance towards commercialized professional football, the ritual use of pyrotechnics, and the sometimes violent tendencies of the ultras have been examined and discussed. Malte Klemmt explores the peculiarities of this organized fan scene in relation to membership in ultra groups and the bond of ultra fans to their groups. He questions the motives and reasons for joining ultra groups, getting involved, and engaging in those special activities that set them apart from the rest of the football audience.
