This book fills a gap. Until now, the civilian population in the Nazi-occupied European nations has hardly played a role in the memory of the victims. The focus of this account, which is organized by country and region, is therefore not on military events but on the fate of the civilian population, everyday life under occupation, the resistance of the occupied, and the terror of the occupying power. The book makes a necessary contribution to the current and ongoing debate about a memorial to the Poles and the documentation center for all victims of Nazi occupation policy in Berlin.
