The author of this volume, Baron August von Berlepsch (1815-1877), was a German bee researcher, inventor of the movable frame hive, and author of numerous monographs on beekeeping and apiculture. Berlepsch particularly advocated for a profound connection between science and practice in beekeeping. He recommended the promotion of teaching apiaries and postulated a profitable beekeeping through migratory beekeeping. His main work was the invention of movable rectangular frames, which are still used in practical beekeeping today, instead of the Dzierzon frames with round rods. Berlepsch arranged a total of 30 frames in experimental hive stands with three levels and developed a detailed, practically tested operating method for this purpose. He constructed the doors of these experimental hives from glass to better observe the bees' way of life.
