Three eras, three wars, one family: a moving novel inspired by the author's family history.
A woman, free for a few days from duties, husband and children, travels from The Hague via Amsterdam to Frankfurt in January 1969. Three love stories run through her mind: her own, that of her parents, that of an ancestor during the Napoleonic wars. She wants to tell about them, but the stories and lives become more and more intertwined. The recollection of the travelling narrator becomes a liberation, also from the emotional poverty and speechlessness of the men.
