Louis Spohr (1784-1859) was a renowned instrumentalist, conductor, and composer during his lifetime. He addressed almost all important vocal and instrumental genres, conducted major music festivals, and established the so-called Kassel School with his numerous students. Although in recent decades, initiated by the Louis Spohr Society in Kassel, the name Spohr has gained renewed attention among music enthusiasts, studies on individual groups of works are still lacking at the musicological level. This publication therefore deals with Louis Spohr and his oratorios 'The Last Judgment' WoO 60, 'The Last Things' WoO 61, 'The Savior's Last Hours' WoO 62, and 'The Fall of Babylon' WoO 63. They are placed in a biographical and music-historical context and critically examined in relation to their creation, performances, and reception. A particular focus is placed on 'The Last Things', which is additionally analyzed exegetically and musically. The book is aimed at all those interested in musicology and serves as a foundation for interpretation, especially for conductors of oratorio choirs.
