For some time now, the topic of professionalization has also been discussed in non-medical healthcare professions, as the term professionalization is associated with securing the respective field of work and improving job opportunities. This also applies to the profession of physiotherapy in Austria. The aim of this work is to examine to what extent this profession can be identified as an independent profession. Additionally, the professionalization of the practitioners themselves will be explored based on their education, training, and continuing education. To answer the raised questions, the method of triangulation (document analysis, literature research, and oral history interviews) will be employed. Based on the findings, a synopsis spectrum will be created to identify the degree of professionalization of the profession and its practitioners, and this will be applied to and evaluated against four historically significant points in the development of physiotherapy. Further considerations for the expansion or refinement of professionalization will be discussed based on the findings.
