A compact and functionally mixed city is being sought again as an urban model, and the guiding principle of 'city of short distances' expresses this approach. The motivation for developing this guiding principle is closely linked to spatial structures that emerged during the suburbanization phase and their effects, such as land consumption and the increase in traffic and environmental burdens. The contributions examine everyday mobility in the areas of shopping, leisure, residential environment, and residential mobility across different neighborhood types in Berlin. Based on extensive quantitative and qualitative surveys, the study investigates the extent to which the mobility behavior of residents aligns with the planning principle of a city of short distances.
