Rainer Maria Rilke's "The Way of Love and Death of Cornet Christoph Rilke" opened the Insel-Bücherei in 1912. The first edition quickly sold out, and new editions followed in rapid succession. The Cornet became a cult book with millions of copies sold and laid the foundation for the author's success and the distinctive book series. The tale of the young flag bearer, who stumbles through the horrors of a universal war with wide eyes, has lost none of its linguistic beauty and relevance to this day.
