Product details

The Ruhr metropolis of Dortmund, once an important imperial and Hanseatic city along the Hellweg, later known for steel, coal, and beer, is the fifth volume in the series "German Historical City Atlas." Thomas Schilp and Stefan Mühlhofer, renowned experts on Dortmund's history, illuminate the city's development from its origins as a royal palace to the present day through thematic maps and texts. The medieval flourishing of the city is showcased, as well as the upheavals brought about by heavy industry and structural change. Above all, the atlas contains historical images and maps that are otherwise difficult to access: old city views, topographic maps, photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as detailed historical floor plans that provide precise insights into the development of the urban area. This work is a collaboration between the Institute for Comparative Urban History in Münster and Dortmund.
