The term human capital was named the "unword" of the year in 2004. Nevertheless, it has made its way into economic and tax law. The author discusses, using the example of professional football in Germany, how human capital can be represented in terms of commercial and tax law as well as according to the regulations of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). This also allows for conclusions to be drawn for less exposed industries, which are very educational and relevant to practice. Regarding the valuation of professional football players, methods of human capital assessment are examined for their suitability for player evaluation, followed by the presentation of a market-oriented valuation model that has already been tested in practice in a similar form.
