The work examines the habits and language of two of the most prominent athletes of the 1930s. Elly Beinhorn and Bernd Rosemeyer were among the glamorous stars of the Nazi era, who allowed themselves to be harnessed as uncritical supporters of the notorious Nazi propaganda, thus managing to maintain an international respectability for the Nazis well into the 1930s. Without discrediting themselves as 'top-ranking Nazis' in the eyes of posterity, they skillfully extracted advantages from this camaraderie while simultaneously presenting themselves as distanced or even resistant to National Socialism. Elly Beinhorn is still regarded today as an impeccable pioneer of aviation, and Bernd Rosemeyer - despite his well-known membership in the SS - is seen as the apolitical charmer from Emsland, who one would not seriously accuse of being entangled in the machinations of the Nazis. The studies documented by Christoph Frilling in this volume allow for a nuanced understanding of both athletes against the backdrop of the historical circumstances.
