In her memoirs, Susanna Schad, née Weber, delivers literary quality with keen empathy and an observant mind. Rather descriptive than evaluative, she portrays her upbringing in Protestant parsonages and orphanages in Bavaria (Diebach, Neuendettelsau, Polsingen) and in Saxony (Euba, Leipzig). Her impressions, experiences, and encounters with people and places are movingly described, such as the early death of both parents, meeting her husband Friedrich Schad (a missionary of the Leipzig and Basel Missions), preparations for the journey to India, the anticipation of the wedding in Madras, as well as the births of her five daughters and son in India. These detailed memories thus serve as vibrant and autobiographical testimonies from around the turn of the century in 1900. They provide an authentic contribution to Protestant mission history, European-Indian cultural history, and the regional histories of Bavaria, Swabia, and Saxony.
