Erinnerungsort Alter Schlachthof / Old Slaughterhouse Memorial Centre
German, English, Joachim Schruder, 2019Product details
For decades, nothing reminded people of the crimes committed at the former municipal slaughterhouse and cattle yard in Düsseldorf-Derendorf during the Nazi regime. Almost 6,000 Jewish women, men and children from the entire Düsseldorf administrative district had to report to the slaughterhouse in the years 1941-1944 on the orders of the Secret State Police. Their luggage was looted in the Grossviehmarkt hall and they had to spend the night there. The next morning they were deported from the Derendorf freight station to ghettos and murder camps in occupied Eastern Europe. With the opening of the new campus of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in 2016, the Alter Schlachthof place of remembrance was set up in the former Grossviehmarkthalle to document these crimes and commemorate those who were persecuted and murdered. It also deals with the consequences of the Nazi tyranny.
